Stock item unit of measurement is a unit intended to measure volumes and quantities of stock items or goods. It can be Weight, Volume, Quantity. The unit of measurement selected for the stock item in the Stock items directory is specified by default in all store documents, operational and configurable reports.

Units of measurement are stored in the Stock item units of measurement directory.

Units of measurement are used to calculate on-hand amount of stock items in store, their purchase prices and cost prices when carrying out any inventory transactions.

The user should specify a displaying format for each measurement unit. This format is used to display the amount of stock items in directories, operational and configurable reports, data grids and print layouts.

Measurement units are consolidated into independent Stock item unit of measurement groups. The Stock item units of measurement allows the user to enter any units of measurement (e.g. litre, kilogram, item, portion, pack, etc). It is recommended to avoid identical names of units of measurement within one group.

Units of measurement from different groups are independent from each other. Units of measurement belonging to different groups can have identical names but different values. For example, the Box unit in For vegetables and For drinks groups will have different capacities.

Any unit of measurement can be converted into other units from the same group using special ratios.

That is why it is recommended to specify the base unit of measurement in each group. For example, it can be kilogram, litre, item, meter. The recalculation ratio for such a base unit is equal to 1. The user can enter incremental units of measurement which are related to the base unit of measurement with a ratio, different from 1. For example, millilitre, gram, centimeter, etc.

The recalculation of measurement units within one group makes it possible to apply that unit which suits the most for different documents. For example, the carrots stock item is measured in kg. This unit of measurement is suitable for stock-in and stock-out records. However, it would be easier to measure it in g for recipes.
