Stock item units of measurement

Revision History

A stock item unit of measurement is a unit used to measure volumes and quantities of stock items or goods. These units can be listed as Weight, Volume, Quantity. The unit of measurement selected for a stock item in the Stock items directory is applied by default in all store documents and operational and configurable reports.

Units of measurement are stored in the Stock item units of measurement directory.

The data in this directory are used to calculate on-hand amounts of stock items in store, their purchase prices, and their cost prices after inventory transactions are carried out.

The user should specify a display format for each unit of measurement. This format is used to display amounts of stock items in directories, operational and configurable reports, data grids, and print layouts.

Measurement units are consolidated into independent Stock item unit of measurement groups. In the Stock item units of measurement directory, the user can enter any unit of measurement (e.g. litre, kilogramme, item, portion, pack, etc). It is recommended that you avoid giving identical names to two or more units of measurement in a single group.

Units of measurement from different groups are independent from each other. Units of measurement belonging to different groups can have identical names and different values. For example, the Box unit in the For vegetables and For drinks groups will have different capacities.

You can convert between units of measurement in the same group by using ratios.

Therefore, it is recommended that you specify a base unit of measurement in each group, e.g. kilogramme, litre, item, meter. The recalculation ratio for the base unit is equal to 1. The user can enter larger or smaller units of measurement, which are related to the base unit of measurement through a ratio other than 1. For example, millilitre, gramme, centimeter, etc.

Recalculation of measurement units within one group allows you to apply the most suitable unit in the group to each document you create. For example, the carrot stock item is measured in kg. This unit of measurement is suitable for stock-in and stock-out records. However, it is easier to measure carrots in g for recipes.
