A KDS is an interactive display system that allows you to automate communication and cooperation among employees as they prepare orders. To learn more about the operations performed by employees when they use the KDS, see 'Operating in Kitchen Display System mode'. The system is comprised of a POS terminal (one per workstation) and a queue management screen (usually a large flat-screen TV).

This chapter gives step-by-step instructions on how to set up a KDS for a typical public catering venue.

Example of how to set up the Kitchen Display System

Two POS terminals need to be configured in the kitchen: one for the work area where hot dishes are prepared and one for the cold dish/drink area. The third POS terminal needs to be set up for assembly processes and the fourth terminal for serving orders. The queue management screen is connected to the POS terminal for the serving area.

Kitchen Display System mode has several system KDS query types. To set up the digital queue management screen, a report based on the system Queue report is used.
