How to set up an Asterisk Private Branch Exchange connection

Chapter 32. How to set up an Asterisk Private Branch Exchange connection

In Delivery and Delivery call centre modes, operators take customer orders via phone. To facilitate the work of the operators, the Asterisk office branch exchange system, which connects phones in the call centre, is built into Tillypad XL POS. This allows them to answer and make calls within Tillypad XL POS.

This chapter explains the settings that need to be configured in Tillypad XL Manager to connect the call centre operator's POS terminal to the PBX, which is controlled by the Asterisk server.

Example of how to connect POS terminals to the Asterisk

The POS terminal needs to be configured to work with a PBX system managed by the Asterisk server.

The Asterisk software module is used for managing the PBX, while operators' phones are managed by the Asterisk, child device software module.

You can use one of the operator's terminals as the PBX device loader. Any child devices that control call centre phones are connected to this device. This is the easiest option to implement, but if the terminal where the loader is launched suddenly shuts down or freezes, phone control will be lost in the entire call centre.

If the call centre has only a few phones, you can configure a PBX device at each operator workstation and connect a child device to manage the operator's phone. This increases the Asterisk server load because a separate connection is used for each phone. However, if any individual workstation freezes or shuts down unexpectedly, other employees' work will not be affected.

In our configuration example, a separate computer is used to manage all the phones in the call centre. This decreases the number of users connected to the server and thus decreases the Asterisk server load. It also minimises delays during phone management operations.
