In Tillypad XL you can use different devices: fiscal registers, customer displays, billiards control devices, paging stations and many others. These devices can be real, e.g. a printer, or virtual, e.g. a portable storage replication assistant. Device drivers are used to control all these devices. A device driver is a software module with settings configured such that it can control a particular device. For the sake of simplicity, this description will use the word devices to describe device drivers.

Software module parameters (parameters, format types, configurable value types, etc.) merge with the parameters specified for a device. The parameters specified for a device overwrite their analogous software module parameters.

Devices used in Tillypad XL are managed in the Devices directory.

The Devices directory has a list of devices and device loaders. This list shows how the devices are connected. A device can be connected to another device or to a device loader. To connect one device to another, you need to specify the parent device software module in the software module connection specification of the child device.

A device loader is a (software) program that is set up or started as an application or a tool (in manual or automatic mode) on computers where device drivers need to be loaded.

Device loader functions:

  • Loading (connecting) new devices to workstations (Tillypad XL Manager and Tillypad XL POS) and to other computers.

  • Updating device software modules.

  • Controlling device operation.
