Point types

A points-based discount system can be used when configuring sales rules for menu items. Using this system, customers receive discounts according to the number of points they have earned.

Points are awarded to customers according to predefined rules depending on orders they make. The number of points awarded can depend on factors like order value, time of day/week, items ordered and so on. The system for awarding points can be configured flexibly, for example 1 point per ?1 spent, or 20 points per ?10.

Different types of points can be used. A Point type defines a points-based discount programme.

Point types are stored in the Point types directory.

Limitations can be set on time periods during which points can be earned and spent. This would allow, for example, a policy whereby cumulative points earned in the course of one month to be spent only from the 5th day of the following month, and to be available to spend for up to a maximum of 12 months, after which they will be lost.

Points are usually registered to a client account linked to an ID such as a mag stripe card. Points are registered when orders are paid for.

Note

A task (of the Transfer points to clients type, for example) must be set up in order for the points operation to be carried out automatically.

In Tillypad XL there are cumulative and non-cumulative points. Cumulative points are awarded to a client account and accumulate with every visit. Points earned can be used to pay for orders during subsequent visits, in which case they are deducted from the account. Non-cumulative points can only be used during a single visit.

A loyalty system based on cumulative points works well in restaurant chains, where points earned in one restaurant can be spent in any other restaurant in the chain. This type of programme can be extended by including partners, e.g. a group of unrelated establishments (for example a restaurant chain, tour agency, beauty salon etc.) agree to award points to their customers when they make purchases. Points earned by the customer will then be honoured by any other organisation participating in the loyalty card scheme.
